Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft on December 17, 1903 at 10:35 am in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Their machine, the Wright Flyer, flew 120 feet in 12 seconds, fundamentally launching the aviation age. This historic event is honored by North Carolina’s “First in Flight” motto.

The Flyer joined the Smithsonian Institution’s collection of historic aircraft in 1948, and is currently on display in a place of honor at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
