Signed Boyd Lee Owens 11″ Pie Plate with Flowers – 1992 – Seagrove, NC Pottery
$70
A beautiful piece of vintage North Carolina redware pottery by folk artist Boyd Lee Owens
Boyd Owens (born 1948) is a fifth-generation master potter and the current owner of Original Owens Pottery in Seagrove, North Carolina. Boyd took over management of the family business from his father, M.L. Owens, in 1975. Their studio is recognized as the oldest continuously operating pottery in North Carolina, established by his grandfather, James H. Owen, in 1895.
He is one of the few Seagrove potters who still digs and processes his own native clay from local sites identified by his father. He uses a 1930s hammermill powered by an old Farmall tractor engine to pulverize the clay.
Boyd is primarily known for turning functional dinnerware, including plates, platters, and pitchers. He works closely with his sister, Nancy Owens Brewer, who is a prolific turner and decorator at the same shop.
Made in Seagrove in 1992, this gorgeous deep ceramic dish features hand-painted flowers and delicate foliage.
Underside signature: “B. Owens, 92″
